New tool: Tekla StruXML Import is released.

Tekla StruXML Import Tool enables direct communication between FEM-Design and Tekla Structures. The direct data transfer is based on conversion of FEM-Design analysis model transfer into Tekla Structures native objects. FEM-Design analysis model is saved as struxml file type and converted to Tekla native objects in the Tekla StruXML Import tool. The proper sections and materials are assigned to Tekla native objects in the mapping process.

The Tekla StruXML Import Tool has the following functionality:
  • importing FEM-Design model to create a new Tekla Structures model,
  • updating Tekla Structures model with changes made in FEM-Design model after the initial import.

Challenges at importing FEM-Design model to Revit

The latest version of our StruSoft StruXML Add-In contains a new workflow possibility, which is import a FEM-Design model into Revit. The new transfer direction is a great opportunity for those who usually start their job in FEM-Design and want to be able to reuse that model in Revit. In this article I would like to highlight some of the issues that one may encounter while integrating a FEM-Design model into Revit.

Connection between Revit and FEM-Design

The transfer of data between Revit and FEM-Design is possible thanks to the StruSoft StruXML Revit Add-In. Data are saved into a XML format and the file is exchanged between Revit and FEM-Design, in both directions. It is not required that both Revit and FEM-Design are installed at the same computer. All the possible information, including links to external articles are gathered on or Revit - FEM-Design integration page.

If you want to try the connection between Revit and FEM-Design, the first step is to download and install the free StruXML Revit Add-in. After installation, a StruSoft FEM-Design panel will be added into Analyze tab in your Revit Structure.

FEM-Design 14 and lateral support

When designing steel structures a few of the beams or columns might be supported for lateral torsional or shear buckling. Instead of defining point supports in those points that might cause the model to act as if totally supported, beams and columns can have their buckling length defined as if supported by reducing the buckling length. Here we will explain how and where to set the buckling lengths.

FEM-Design 14 and DWG-import

In the end of 2011 we introduced the External reference-command to be able to have a model that you could connect several dwg-files to. In FEM-Design 11, we have made further refinements to this function, and they are still valid in FEM-Design 14. In this post we will explain the function step-by-step.
